Ukraine – Mobile Healthcare for Communities Under Strain
Why Healthcare Remains a Priority
Situation
As Ukraine enters a fourth year of sustained conflict, civilian healthcare systems—particularly in frontline and near-frontline regions such as Kharkiv—continue to operate under extreme strain. Repeated attacks on infrastructure, ongoing population displacement, and workforce shortages have significantly disrupted access to basic medical care. According to humanitarian health assessments, millions of Ukrainians continue to face barriers to primary healthcare and mental health support, particularly older adults, people with disabilities, women-led households, and internally displaced persons.
In many communities, fixed healthcare facilities are either damaged, understaffed, or unsafe to access regularly. At the same time, prolonged stress, trauma, and uncertainty have led to a sharp rise in untreated chronic illness and psychological distress, compounding the long-term health risks faced by already vulnerable populations. In this context, flexible, mobile, and locally coordinated healthcare services remain essential to reaching people where care would otherwise be unavailable.
Key Achievements in 2025
In 2025, Give to the World partnered with MedGlobal, a trusted humanitarian medical organization, to support a mobile clinic serving conflict-affected communities in the Kharkiv region.
Through this partnership:
585 patients received medical care, with a focus on:
Infectious diseases (178 cases)
Chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes (280 cases)
Reproductive health services (46 cases)
Other non-communicable diseases (65 cases)
Mental health and psychosocial support addressed the often invisible toll of prolonged conflict:
105 participants attended group sessions focused on trauma, fear of the future, and psychological first aid
57 individuals received one-on-one counseling for exhaustion, loneliness, displacement-related stress, and refugee syndrome
Targeted outreach supported those most at risk:
Internally displaced persons
People with disabilities
Members of host communities absorbing displaced families
Social support services included assistance with documentation, referrals, and family-centered recreational activities for children—recognizing that health outcomes are deeply connected to social stability and dignity.
Together, these services reflected a holistic, patient-centered model of care, addressing physical illness while also responding to the psychological and social consequences of prolonged war.
Why This Matters to Our Mission
Give to the World prioritizes practical, human-centered solutions in places where systems are under the greatest strain. In Ukraine, healthcare access is not only a medical need—it is a stabilizing force for families and communities navigating daily uncertainty.
Mobile healthcare models allow trusted local professionals to reach people who cannot safely or reliably access hospitals or clinics. By addressing chronic illness early, providing mental health support, and strengthening local coordination, this approach helps prevent long-term deterioration, reduces avoidable suffering, and supports community resilience.
For donors, this work represents a tangible way to ensure that care reaches those who might otherwise be left behind—without duplicating efforts or replacing local systems.
2026 Outlook: Healthcare Needs
Looking ahead to 2026, Give to the World anticipates continued support for healthcare access in conflict-affected regions of Ukraine. Based on current humanitarian health assessments and partner insights, priority needs are expected to include:
Primary healthcare access in hard-to-reach and frontline communities
Chronic disease management, as prolonged system disruption continues to put lives at risk
Mental health and psychosocial support, particularly for displaced populations, caregivers, and older adults
Mobile and adaptive service delivery models that can respond quickly to changing security conditions
Specific project designs and implementation details will be finalized in close collaboration with trusted partners and shared as they are confirmed.
