Somalia — Civil-Military Medical Support for Displaced and Host Communities
Partner: Bancroft Global Development
Overview
Currently, Somalia faces a grave humanitarian crisis, where millions of Somalis have been forcibly displaced and targeted due to the ongoing conflict against al-Shabaab insurgents. Somalis are also facing disease, hunger and devastating rainfall which further exacerbates the need for humanitarian assistance. With Give To The World’s donations and Bancroft Global Development's continued partnership with us, we have succeeded in providing crucial medical, social and food assistance to the Somali people.
In 2025, Give to the World’s partnership with Bancroft Global Development continued to play a critical role in expanding access to essential medical care for civilians across Somalia. Through coordinated Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) initiatives with the Ugandan contingent of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the Somali National Army's (SNA’s) Danab Brigade, Bancroft delivered life-saving healthcare and humanitarian support to communities affected by conflict, displacement, flooding, and extreme poverty.
As insecurity, displacement, and limited public health infrastructure persist across the country, CIMIC activities in Mogadishu and Lower Shabelle remain one of the few ways civilians—particularly women and children—can access basic medical services. Give to the World’s support enabled Bancroft to respond flexibly across hospitals, villages, and newly liberated areas, reaching civilians who would otherwise go without care.
Medical CIMIC in Hospitals
Throughout 2025, Give to the World funding enabled Bancroft to procure essential medicines, consumables, and diagnostic support for AUSSOM Level I and Level II hospitals in Mogadishu and Baledogle, as well as for mobile and special outreach events.
Total civilians treated in 2025: 5,424
Services included medical consultations, infection management, wound care, pediatric care, maternal health support, and access to medications that civilians otherwise would have had to purchase themselves—often an impossible barrier for under-resourced families.
In addition, Give to the World funded a critical CT scan for a civilian patient at the Turkish Hospital in Mogadishu when advanced imaging was unavailable at the AUSSOM hospital. This diagnostic intervention directly informed life-saving medical decisions.
Field CIMIC Outreach Events
Through CIMIC’s mobile clinics, Bancroft has been able to provide urgent medical care, school supplies and food supplies in recently liberated towns within Lower Shabelle such as Bariirem, Sabid Anole, and Bulo Mareer. Supporting the local population in liberated areas is key to long-term stabilization, as it garners the population’s support for the Somali government. Since the population does not have alternative means of seeking health care, CIMIC events are key to improving community health and resilience.
In 2025, Bancroft supported multiple CIMIC outreach events in villages across Lower Shabelle and central Somalia.
These events provided:
On-site medical consultations and treatment
Pediatric and maternal health care
Obstetric ultrasounds and safe-delivery counseling
Distribution of essential medications, hygiene kits, and medical supplies
Health education focused on infection prevention, nutrition, and maternal care
Total civilians treated during field CIMIC medical outreach events in 2025: 1,495 civilians
Several outreach events specifically targeted communities returning after displacement due to fighting with al-Shabaab or environmental shocks such as flooding. Medical teams treated high rates of respiratory infections, malnutrition-related conditions, foot injuries from prolonged displacement, and complications among pregnant women and newborns.
The presence of female medical personnel and midwives proved essential in reaching women and supporting maternal and newborn health, strengthening trust between communities and security forces.
Supporting Education & Community Resilience
Beyond healthcare, Give to the World funding supported education and dignity-focused interventions in the SNA Village School in Baledogle.
Key activities included:
Delivery of solar generators and solar panels, enabling classroom lighting and night classes
Training teachers on equipment maintenance to ensure sustainability
Distribution of school supplies, notebooks, pencils, and clothing
Support for English-language learning, critical for future access to higher education
Additionally, during medical outreach events, mentors distributed sanitary pads and soap to address period poverty—helping reduce school absenteeism among girls and promoting dignity, health, and gender equality.
Key Achievements in 2025
5,424 civilians received medical care across hospitals
1,495 civilians treated during field CIMIC medical outreach events
Expanded access to care for women, children, and displaced families
Maternal health services strengthened through midwife deployment and ultrasound access
Medical supplies enabled hospitals to treat civilians regardless of ability to pay
Education and energy infrastructure improved for schoolchildren in military family communities
Strengthened trust between civilians and national and regional security forces
Why This Work Matters
In Somalia, access to healthcare remains deeply constrained by insecurity, poverty, and limited infrastructure. Civilians frequently delay or forgo care entirely due to cost, distance, or fear. CIMIC initiatives supported by Give to the World bridge this gap—delivering care directly to communities while reinforcing stability, dignity, and recovery in fragile settings.
As humanitarian needs persist and displacement continues, sustained support is essential to prevent further loss of life, improve maternal and child health outcomes, and ensure that basic medical care is not a privilege reserved only for those who can afford it.
2026 PROJECT MENU
Medical CIMIC & Community Support in Somalia
Bancroft plans to continue implementing medical CIMIC events to reach Somali civilians in remote areas. As African Union and Somali forces continue to liberate territory along the Central Somali coastline, the need for mobile medical outreach and post-liberation support remains urgent. Communities emerging from armed conflict and displacement require immediate access to healthcare, maternal services, and essential supplies.
There is also an increasing need to continue supporting the SNA Village School in Baledogle. The World Bank and the Federal Government of Somalia have partnered to build a new school building, including multiple classrooms, facilities such as offices and meeting rooms for the teachers, and gender-segregated ablution units.
The school will support 140 children teaching classes 1-6, many of whom are orphans of soldiers who fought and died for Somalia’s military.
Bancroft plans to continue implementing medical CIMIC events in newly liberated towns and to support the operational needs of the SNA Village School in Baledogle.
