Emergency Shelter and Non-Food Assistance for Flood-Affected Families

The Situation

Barangay Upper Hinaplanon, Iligan City, The Phillipines

In early February 2026, Tropical Depression Penha (locally Typhoon Basyang) caused widespread flooding across Iligan City. While several barangays received assistance, Barangay Upper Hinaplanon remained underserved, leaving hundreds of families without the basic household items needed to restore safe and healthy living conditions.

A rapid needs assessment conducted by MARADECA ten days after the storm identified:

  • 850 affected families (4,003 individuals)

  • 24 homes totally destroyed

  • 129 homes partially damaged

  • 697 homes flooded

  • 466 children under five

  • 177 senior citizens

  • 40 pregnant women

  • 30 persons with disabilities

Floodwaters damaged bedding, cooking utensils, water containers, and shelter materials. Many families are sleeping on damp floors without mosquito protection, safe water storage, or functional cooking equipment.

Our Partner in Action

Our partner, MARADECA, has completed validation and is ready to distribute emergency shelter and non-food assistance in March 2026.

The intervention will provide:

For all 850 families:

  • Sleeping mat

  • Mosquito net

  • Blanket

  • Water container

For 153 partially damaged homes:

  • Complete cooking kits including butane stove

For 24 totally damaged homes:

  • Corrugated sheets

  • Plywood

  • Tarpaulin

  • Roofing nails

This distribution restores minimum living standards, helping families sleep safely, cook meals, and reduce exposure to waterborne and vector-borne illnesses.

Your support ensures that families regain safety, dignity, and stability. Every contribution helps MARADECA distribute essential items efficiently and effectively.

Average Cost per Family: ~$40

Why This Work Matters

Give to the World supports partners year-round across Ukraine, Somalia, Jordan, and other mission-aligned regions.

Today, the most urgent intervention is in the Philippines, where 850 flood-affected families are still without essential household items. At the same time, we continue advancing:

  • Healthcare support efforts in Ukraine

  • Stabilization initiatives in Somalia

  • Other global partnerships aligned with our mission

The humanitarian funding environment is shifting. As institutional funding streams become less predictable, community-based organizations are shouldering greater responsibility, often without traditional safety nets. Our relationship-driven and locally anchored model ensures that trusted partners can act quickly and responsibly when emergencies arise.

We typically reconnect with many of our supporters at our annual event. But in moments like this, timing matters. By sharing this response now, we provide the opportunity for you to support families who cannot wait for the calendar to turn.

Accountability and Safeguarding

  • Beneficiary lists validated with barangay officials

  • Distribution sheets signed by households

  • Photo documentation of aid delivery

  • Post-distribution monitoring to ensure adequate utilization of items

  • Priority lanes and protection-sensitive setup for vulnerable populations

Closing Note

We are grateful for your ongoing support of Give To The World. By standing with our partners, you help ensure that urgent humanitarian needs are met, families are protected, and communities can rebuild sustainably.
