SOMALIAOngoing armed conflict, a terrorist insurgency by al-Shabaab, insecurity, lack of state protection, and recurring humanitarian crises has led to an estimated 2.6 million IDPs in Somalia; with poverty rates varying by region from 26-70%. Conflict, drought, and flooding has disrupted agricultural production cycles and an estimated 2.7 million people in Somalia are at risk of not meeting their dietary needs. As a result, around 1.2 million children are malnourished.
Remarkable progress has been made since the re-establishment of government institutions in 2013, but there are still significant obstacles. Three decades of civil war has severely weakened the health care system, and as a result, the Somali National Development Plan for 2019–2024 has identified primary healthcare as a key channel for improving living conditions in Somalia. Give to the World has partnered with Bancroft Global Development to provide medical care for civilians in areas recently liberated from al-Shabaab. Over the years Give to the World has also supported the treatment of Somali National Army and AMISOM troops through the distribution of essential medical supplies. Together we have treated more than 47,000 patients since 2012. However, Somalis, particularly those in rural areas, continue to lack access to critical medical services. Consistent militant activity by al-Shabaab and ISIS-Somalia limits civilian access to essential networks of support. The COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns have further limited access, specifically decreasing access to health services by over 40%. While PPE is being flown into Somalia by various international organizations, it is not reaching much further than the capital of Mogadishu. IMPACT OF YOUR DONATION Give to the World has partnered with Bancroft Global Development to provide medical care for civilians in areas recently liberated from al-Shabaab. Over the years, Give to the World has also supported the treatment of Somali National Army and AMISOM troops through the distribution of essential medical supplies. Since 2018, we have treated around 40 000 patients. Whilst we continue our operations in areas newly liberated from al-Shabaab outside of the capital, skyrocketing prices and resource scarcity have limited our ability to deliver services to civilians in need. Your support will provide essential medicines and medical supplies to civilians in areas newly liberated from al-Shabaab. The medical care provided by our partner is typically the only medical care that these communities can access. In addition to saving lives, this medical care promotes stabilization by building the trust of local communities. |

ETHIOPIA
The situation in Somalia caused a refugee crisis in the Jijiga region in Ethiopia. As of 2020 there is a refugee population of 39,285 people, of whom 60% are below the age of 18. Due to budget constraints, there is a limited supply of medication, insufficient specialised treatments and long travels to health clinics. Give to the World previously supported the people of Jijiga and Somali refugees by providing vital medical supplies to serve hundreds of desperate patients at local clinics.
