A true story from Operation Iraqi Freedom:

The platoon has just moved into position. They have their target house within their sights and before anyone has detected their presence, they are standing inside of the two-room structure with the family who occupies the small mud hut. They have not come to make an arrest or search for weapons, but earlier that month, these elite troops noticed that the family members inside were living in desperate conditions. A young husband and wife trying to support and protect two 11 month old boys, each of whom was suffering from dysentery and had only a single t-shirt to wear on their small frames. With only a single cow to produce for them and a harsh winter of numerous 20 degree nights ahead of them, the family was clearly in desperate need of assistance. The platoon provides the Iraqi family with multiple blankets, clothes and medicine and then slips away before any notices their presence. Another mission accomplished for the US Armed Forces and the people who gave donations to Give to the World.

A true story from Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan:

The Marine snipers were observing an area of their sector. After just a short time in their position, it became clear that one of the local families had been suffering greatly. One of the small huts contained just a single room with two men, a wife and four small children. Temperatures in the winter were routinely below zero and the earth in their area had been wiped free of trees during the Soviet occupation. The family was only able to generate a small warming and cooking fire from the dug-up roots that remained. One of the men had lost a leg from a land-mine in the 1980’s and was unable to provide for the family, while his brother walked fifteen miles a day with their handful of goats in order to find enough grass to feed the tiny flock.

Later, the platoon approached the house. Their mission was to help the family in any way possible. They were welcomed with open arms like long-lost relatives by the Afghanis, who had proven to be some of the most hospitable people in the world. The platoon learned of the family’s story and brought them a large supply of food, water, blankets and clothes to assist their lives. The excess material from the clothing and blankets could now be used as windows to cover the openings in the side of their hut. The young boys and girls were brought school supplies and stuffed animals. The family was so overwhelmed that a tear ran down the face of the men, whose rugged faces had been weathered by years of hardship. The boys and girls smiled from ear to ear. Give to the World, in conjunction with the US Armed Forces, provided the supplies to make this possible. We just need your donation to help get these items to more people in these desperate conditions.
